Ethanol Plants Alternative Fuel Systems
Ethanol is increasingly being used as an automotive fuel worldwide. Fuel used is in 10% ethanol to 85% gasoline combination. This mix is termed as ‘gasohol’. It makes a good alternative fuel. Ethanol contains molecules of oxygen that allow for an exhaustive combustion of the fuel thus increasing its efficiency. This is a renewable form of fuel since ethanol comes from plants that grow on sun’s energy. |

US is the largest consumer of gasoline. Hence, the country has taken on itself the onus of producing ethanol in large quantities. Corn is the raw material grown for the production of ethanol. It is small wonder that supply of corn to the world market has dropped considerably. Corn output in the year 2006 was 282 million tones. 2007 saw production of 300 million tones of corn. A large number of this produce went in the making of ethanol. Consequently, fewer amounts were available in the market for consumption as food.
Brazil is another country that has taken to manufacturing and usage of ethanol. But instead of corn, sugarcane is used to produce ethanol. France uses grapes. But these are not very high quality grapes.
Many countries are now adopting ethanol as a fuel to run vehicles. India plans to implement a blend of 10 per cent ethanol with gasoline and 15 per cent with diesel. This combination will be made mandatory in at least one Indian state. Canada offers discount of 15% to vehicles using ethanol as a fuel. Brazil also largely consumes ethanol. A total of 4 billion gallons of ethanol is used annually. Sweden is another country following this trend. As a result, the nation’s crude oil requirement has come down considerably.
Ethanol seems to be the answer to the burning question of alternative fuels. Its another advantage is that when used with gasoline or diesel it can help lower the level of toxic gas emissions from the engine.
