Properties Of Benzene

Benzene is a clear, colorless and odorless liquid. However, benzene in the chemical industry is considered as an aromatic compound. In chemistry, benzene’s formula is C6H6. Benzene was discovered by Michael Faraday in 1825. The freezing point for benzene is 41.9 degrees Fahrenheit or 5.5 degrees Celsius. The boiling point of Benzene is 176 degrees Fahrenheit or 80.1 degrees Celsius.

Benzene is soluble in water and easily gels with alcohol, chloroform, carbons and ether solutions. There are several other organic solvents available for benzene. Benzene is often confused with another petrol chemical called benzyne. However, they both have different chemical properties.

When benzene goes through chemical reactions, it undergoes substitution. That is the compounds of benzene get easily substituted with other compounds. The hydrogen atoms of benzene are replaced in the process of substitution. Whenever benzene reacts with other organic compounds, there is a new chemical formed. Also, two or three substitutions can occur at the same time in a benzene molecule.

Benzene is extremely a valuable compound for several industrial processes. It is used to make other chemicals in gasoline and petroleum plants, it is used in manufacturing of polymers, plastics, nylon and rayon. It is used in manufacture of resins. It is also used in the making of several house hold cleaners that we use on a day to day purpose. Since it is an easily soluble compound it is used as a cleaning agent. Benzene is often derived as a byproduct from petroleum and gasoline and is stored accordingly.
